Hardware controller
Lightning is completely controlable via MIDI. If you have a hardware controller connected to your computer, just right-click (or CTRL+Click) a slider or button and choose 'MIDI Learn'. Move the fader or button on the hardware controller and there you go.
Sequencer
If you want to control Lightning from a sequencer, it can be a burdon to make it Learn the midi controllers first. The easiest way to do this is to goto: MainMenu > Utility > Load Default Midi Controllers. It loads the following controllers:

Configuring MIDI for interapplication operation.
If you want multiple applications to communicate with each other through MIDI, you should enable a IAC midi bus. This is already present in OSX, but you have to activate a MIDI bus. To activate this, type 'MIDI' in Spotlight (CMD + SPACE). It should show the Audio/MIDI Configuration, select this. If necessary, click 'Window', then 'Show MIDI Window'. Doubleclick 'IAC Driver' and set it online. Be sure there is at least one Port or Bus available.
Lightning automatically recognized the new MIDI port. But some software has to be restarted or configured to work with new MIDI Port. MIDI Configuration Screenshot QLab Default Preferences
